Winter Wedding at Straus Home Ranch in Tomales Bay

I’ve lived in Northern California for the majority of my adult life at this point, but I honestly do not take for granted that I have access to some of the most stunning nature on the planet. I still can’t believe I get to live here. It’s probably not surprising to anyone that there is no shortage of incredible, nature-immersed places to get married. And yet, some wedding venues rise above. For me, Straus Home Ranch is one of those places.

The first reason is perhaps most apparent: it’s a tranquil, breathtaking place that’s simultaneously expansive and intimate, wild and accessible, of land and sea. The landscape is pastoral and coastal, with sloping hills in all directions, curved cypress trees, and views of the glassy Tomales Bay. There’s a deep connection between the ranch and the bay that feels distinctly Northern Californian, peaceful and grounding. On top of that, and equally important (imo) is the warmth and truly welcoming spirit of the folks who own, run, and live on the ranch. I’ve photographed a handful of weddings here over the years, and I’m greeted and remembered each time with beaming smiles and generosity by the Straus siblings. I cannot emphasize enough how much it matters to work with good, kind people on your wedding day! You can feel their love for the land, their attentiveness as hosts, and the work they put into making it a magical experience. (If you’re curious, read about their inspiring family story.)

I’ve documented weddings at Straus in all seasons, but late winter is my favorite. The rain dramatically transforms the hills from golden and sun-bleached to the most lush, vibrant green. Everything is ultra alive and crisp. Just the scent of damp earth mixed with saltiness from the bay is enough of a draw for me. It feels secluded and cozy, plus you can request a bonfire at night to stay warm.

Which brings me to the sweet, quirky, and super fun wedding day of two very joyful humans. Gabrielle and Raul’s winter wedding was family oriented, intimate (~45 of their dearest) and infused with their playful personalities. They stayed the weekend in the farmhouse, got ready together with their closest friends, and opted for a small Jewish ceremony on the lawn (rather than up the hill in the eucalyptus grove as some do – something I love about Straus is the variety of settings). The rest was a big eccentric love fest in the barn. Cutest lil champagne tower moment, handmade backdrop for polaroids, and a birthday cake for Raul’s mom. I’m beyond grateful for being a part of this day. And I’d document weddings at Straus again and again and again. [shot on 35mm film + digital]
